This is an optical compressor with pre-bass and post-treble controls based of the BJFE Pale Green Compressor. Versions of this compressor have been used by Jim James (My Morning Jacket), Reeves Gabrels (The Cure), Neal Casal (Phil Lesh and Friends)
Backstory from Bjorn:
"I made the first version of these back in the late 1980’s in order to get a bouncy playing feel I needed for guitar parts in a Beatles tribute band. Later in the early 2000’s, the compressor entered the BJFE line as a guitarist friend found my original unit on a shelf and wondered what it was. The Mallard Green has the latest improvements making this version just about as good as it gets."
Controls:
Volume - sets output level.
Comp - sets gain below the compression threshold so that the "weaker" frequencies can be amplified.
Bass - this controls how bass or low frequencies are compressed and how easily low notes trigger compression. It can be used to balance compression between strings.
Treble - this controls the brightness of the sound. Because compression makes a difference between the strong and weak frequencies, the sound will get brighter when compressed. This control can balance that to an illusion less coloration.
